The fires almost always start from a small cause, develop one small outbreak which over time escalates and becomes rampant. It is estimated that the Fire Brigade is required to face an average of about 114 fires per day, accross the Greek territory.
Fire extinguishers are essential. They are designed to launch special extinguishing materials that interrupt the progress of the fire. The low purchase and maintenance cost in relation to efficiency, makes them one of the main tools in dealing with fires and therefore they are imposed by law. Fire extinguishers are effective in extinguishing a fire in its early stages and statistically, about 60% of fires are treated with their use. It is crucial that the fire exinguishers are properly maintained and that the staff are properly trained for their use.
IN CASE OF FIRE
- Keep calm.
- Raise alarm, be sure to call the fire department on 199.
- Use the nearest fire extinguisher immediately. The discharge time of fire extinguisher is approximately 6 – 15 sec. Use all the extinguishing media.
- Remove the fuse.
- Aim at the fire from a distance of 3-4 meters.
- Press the lever.
